Friday night was a brutal one for VfB Stuttgart, with Bayern Munich cruising to a 5-1 victory. However, despite the heavy defeat, there was one Stuttgart player who continued to attract attention: center-back Finn Jeltsch.
The 19-year-old defender had the unenviable task of trying to contain a Bayern Munich attack that eventually found the net five times. It was far from a perfect night for Stuttgart defensively, but Jeltsch still showed flashes of the qualities that have made him one of the most
exciting young defenders in Germany.
Jeltsch looked composed for large stretches of the match, competed well physically and was willing to step forward and challenge Bayern Munich’s attackers rather than simply sitting deep. Of course, playing against Bayern Munich is one of the toughest tests a young Bundesliga defender can face, and a 5-1 defeat will inevitably expose areas where improvement is still needed.
But that raises an interesting question for Germany.
With Jürgen Klopp now beginning his tenure as Germany head coach, should Jeltsch already be entering the conversation for a senior national-team call-up?
He is still only 19, so there is absolutely no need to rush his development. At the same time, Germany has a history of giving talented young players opportunities when they demonstrate that they belong at the highest level.
So, Bayern fans, what did you think of Finn Jeltsch against Bayern Munich? Does the Stuttgart center-back deserve a Germany call-up?
