The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers desperately needing a victory. They responded with their most dominant performance of the season, cruising to a 43-13 win at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
With quarterback Baker Mayfield returning to the starting lineup after missing three games due to a thumb injury, Tampa Bay (2-5) established control early and never looked back. The Buccaneers’ rushing attack and opportunistic defense carried the way as Carolina
(3-3) struggled to find answers throughout the afternoon.
Tampa Bay wasted little time establishing its ground game, marching 70 yards on a 14-play opening possession that consumed more than seven minutes. Running back Bucky Irving carried much of the offensive workload, while Mayfield connected with wide receiver Tez Johnson for a key 19-yard completion on third-and-10. Irving eventually capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown run to give the Buccaneers an early 7-0 advantage.
The Buccaneers’ defense forced Carolina to punt on its opening possession, and a special teams mistake late in the first quarter gave Tampa Bay another scoring opportunity. Panthers returner David Moore muffed a punt that was recovered by tight end Ko Kieft at Carolina’s 18-yard line. Although Tampa Bay couldn’t reach the end zone, Chase McLaughlin connected on a 22-yard field goal early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 10-0.
Things quickly unraveled for Carolina from there.
Following a sack by Yaya Diaby, linebacker Al-Quadin Muhammad stripped Panthers quarterback Bryce Young on the following play. Defensive tackle Calijah Kancey recovered the loose football and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown, pushing Tampa Bay’s lead to 17-0.
Carolina briefly responded with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Young to tight end Darren Waller. However, even that scoring play came with a setback for the Panthers. Tykee Smith blocked the ensuing extra-point attempt, allowing cornerback Zyon McCollum to recover the football and return it for a defensive two-point conversion, making the score 19-6.
The Buccaneers continued pounding the football on their next possession, with Kenneth Gainwell breaking free for a 29-yard run before Irving scored his second touchdown of the afternoon from one yard out.
Tampa Bay’s defense delivered another opportunity before halftime when McCollum intercepted Young and returned the ball 18 yards to Carolina’s 32-yard line. Mayfield capitalized on the takeaway, finding Johnson for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds remaining in the half.
The Buccaneers entered the locker room with a commanding 33-6 advantage after scoring 26 points in the second quarter.
Carolina’s offensive struggles continued after halftime as Diaby recorded two more sacks on the Panthers’ opening possession of the third quarter. The Buccaneers’ defense later forced another turnover when Smith intercepted Young near Carolina’s 32-yard line.
Although Tampa Bay’s offense slowed considerably in the third quarter, McLaughlin added a 44-yard field goal to extend the lead to 36-6.
The Panthers eventually put together a sustained drive deep into Buccaneers territory, but Tampa Bay’s defense stood firm. Facing fourth-and-1 at the Buccaneers’ five-yard line, Young threw an incomplete pass, turning the football over on downs.
Tampa Bay carried its 30-point lead into the fourth quarter and continued controlling the clock with its ground game. The Buccaneers put together a nine-play, 94-yard drive that consumed more than six minutes, highlighted by a 46-yard touchdown run from Sean Tucker to increase the advantage to 43-6.
Carolina added a late touchdown on a 12-yard run by Anthony Tyus III with backup quarterback Kenny Pickett leading the offense, but the outcome had long been decided.
Irving finished with 106 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, while Mayfield completed seven of 11 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown in his return. Tampa Bay’s defense recorded five sacks and intercepted Young twice, with Diaby leading the charge with three sacks.
The Buccaneers will now look to build on the victory when they return home to face the Atlanta Falcons in another important NFC South matchup next Sunday.
