With training camp just over a week away, the San Antonio Spurs have filled their 15th and final roster spot. On Monday, the Spurs announced they had re-signed big man, Bismack Biyombo to a 1-year contract.
Biyombo joined the Spurs last season in the aftermath of the De’Aaron Fox trade that sent Zach Collins to the Chicago Bulls, and Victor Wembanyama’s season ending injury. He started in 26 of his 28 games with the Spurs, averaging 5.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in 18.9 minutes per game.
At 33, Biyombo
brings a veteran presence to the Spurs bench, and will likely play a depth role behind Wembanyama and the newly acquired Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. Biyombo is entering his 15th NBA season. He’s played in 897 career games for the Charlotte Bobcats and Hornets, Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder. He’s averaged 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks over the course of his career.
Biyombo filled in admirably for the Spurs when they desperately needed big man depth last season. Despite being later in his career, he is still a solid rebounder and rim protector, more than capable of playing spot minutes in an NBA game. After San Antonio’s frontcourt depth was quickly depleted last season, they’ve made it a point to have plenty of bodies behind Wembanyama.
San Antonio starts training camp next Wednesday, September 24th. They have a full roster with 15 players under NBA contracts, three two-way players, and four exhibit-10 training camp invitees.
