Three starting-caliber center-backs seems like it should be one too many in a two-man central defense. But not this season at Bayern Munich. Newcomer Jonathan Tah has arrived this season and settled into the XI, displacing one of last year’s starters in Kim Min-jae, but that does not mean that three’s a crowd.
You might even say — three’s Kompany.
“This group we have is special,” Tah said in a Sky Germany interview this month (as as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Everyone brings something to the table
in their own way. That’s important because everyone can learn something from each other. We all want to improve — we want to grow. And then we have a coach [Vincent Kompany] who has played in this position as well. So yes — it feels really good.”
Tah, the German international, and France starter Dayot Upamecano look like the top pairing going forward. But Kim does not look like he is clamoring for an exit either. How long can this arrangement last, and remain harmonious? Time will tell, but at least times for now are good.
