Liverpool FC Women have today announced the signing of Swiss forward Aurélie Csillag from SC Freiburg, where she scored three goals in three starts and 12 total appearances during her six months in the Frauen-Bundesliga
(four goals in all competitions).
She moved to Germany just six months ago from Basel, which she joined in the winter window of 2023. The 22-year-old began her career at FC Blue Stars Zurich, playing with the first team for the first time in 2020.
She has 12 senior international caps for Switzerland, scoring her first goal in a friendly against Wales in December.
Csillag awaits international clearance for her move, but told Liverpoolfc.com that she looks forward to the challenge of the league (likely made all the more difficult given Liverpool’s current place at the foot of the table):
“For me, the [Barclays Women’s] Super League was always a dream. When I was a little child, I always wanted to play in the Super League. And then when I heard from Liverpool, it was a nice city, a nice club, a lot of tradition and history, I didn’t have any doubts to join this winter.
“The training centre is amazing. I’ve never seen a training centre in a women’s club like this. I was very, very surprised and very happy that I could see this and join this. I’m looking forward to playing against the big clubs. For me, it’s the best league in the world. It’s a big chance for me to show what I can do on the pitch in this league.”
This move will come as something like a birthday present for the Swiss forward, as she turns 23 this week on January 24th. Reds fans all over will hope she celebrates with some goals to build on her new team’s domestic cup triumph last weekend.
