It’s been another lackluster preseason for the Cavs. They’ve dropped all three games so far and have fallen to 2-13 in the preseason over the last few years. Not that anyone really cares. Cleveland rested their usual starters in their most recent loss to the Boston Celtics. Because… none of this counts for anything yet.
There are still things to watch for, however. Cleveland will likely begin ramping up, as this is their final preseason game before the real season starts next week. This is the last opportunity for players like Craig Porter Jr, Tyrese Proctor and Jaylon Tyson, specifically, to make an impression.
The Cavs already know what they have in Porter. He’s been with the team for over two years. But finding legitimate minutes for Porter in the regular season has been a challenge. The preseason allows Cleveland to experiment with its rotation and give on-court reps to the bench. Porter could earn himself some good favor if he ends the preseason closer to how he began — when he nailed five three-pointers against Chicago.
Tyson and Proctor might have even more to earn. Proctor, being a rookie, will only have so many chances to prove himself once the actual games start. This preseason game versus Detroit is one of the last guaranteed bursts of minutes he’ll have. The same goes for Tyson, whose offensive production has been lacking thus far. A good scoring game from either Proctor or Tyson would be nice to see.
Most of all, we’d just like to see a win. We know these games don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. But finishing the preseason with a win against the Pistons would be a nice way to transition to the regular season.
