Good morning, baseball fans!
It was announced earlier this week that former San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy will be returning to the organization in an advisory capacity.
Bochy was the Giants’ manager
from 2007 to 2019, before announcing his retirement. But baseball was not out of his system yet, so he eventually returned to manage the Texas Rangers in 2023, when he led them to their very first ever World Series Championship. (You know, after helping the Giants block them from one in 2010.)
In an interview with Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, Bochy had this to say:
“I’m looking forward to getting back to the Bay. And of course, I’m looking forward to getting back with the San Francisco Giants, seeing familiar faces and hopefully bring value any way I can.”
Personally, I love this news. I will forever have a soft spot in my heart for the man who managed the Giants to three World Series Championships in the 2010s. So it’s really going to be great to see him around again, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience from a lifetime of playing, coaching and managing.
I always felt like he was kind of forced to announce his retirement after the 2019 season so the Giants could save face in their pursuit of new management. He has never said that that was the case, to be clear, that was just the impression I got from how things unfolded and the fact that he came back to the game as quickly as he did.
So it’s nice to see him come back to the organization, in any capacity. Heck, even if his “advisory” position is just him sitting in the stands near the dugout, drinking a beer, chatting with Buster Posey, and heckling Tony Vitello. I’m here for it.
