It took 13 innings, but the Mariners were able to sweep away the Cardinals last night at T-Mobile Park. Unfortunately, they now have to turn right around and start a four-game set against the AL West-rival Angels, who always seem to play the Mariners tough. The Angels haven’t exactly gone gently into that good light; they’re hanging around at .500 ball over the last couple of weeks, and Jo Adell has been on a tear. Bryce Miller will need to keep him and the dangerous top of the Angels lineup quiet
while also working deep into this game to save a beleaguered bullpen. It’s a big ask of Miller, who’s coming off a bit of a bumpy start in Atlanta where he gave up two runs in just a little over five innings.
Lineups:
Cal Raleigh is right back in there after catching all of last night’s marathon 13-inning affair, only to be rewarded by having the bat taken out of his hands twice late in the game. Rule change proposal: you’re only allowed to intentionally walk an individual player one time in extra innings. The Angels will throw back-to-back lefties in the next two games of this series, so Cal should get a break after today.
Scratch that part in the intro about Adell – he’s a late scratch from the lineup tonight with vertigo, something he’s been dealing with for a while. Old frenemy Chris Taylor takes his place, playing right field, and Bryce Teodosio moves to center.
News:
One pitcher the Mariners won’t see in this series is lefty Reid Detmers, who’s been working out of the bullpen for the Halos this year. The Angels placed him on the 15-day IL with left elbow inflammation and recalled righty Chase Silseth from Triple-A to take his place.

- 1977: After starter Rich Honeycutt gives up four runs over five innings, Enrique Romo provides 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing the Mariners to go ahead 6-4 in a win over the Rangers.
- 1981: Jeff Burroughs collects three hits and is a triple shy of the cycle as the Mariners romp over the Blue Jays, 8-1. Glenn Abbott pitches eight innings of one-run ball.

- 2016: Ketel Marte hits a go-ahead single in the ninth at Oakland, and Edwin Diaz records his 15th save in the bottom of the inning. He is the fifth rookie in Mariners history to record 15 or more saves (Sasaki, 37 in 2000; Farquhar, 16 in 2013; Romo, 16 in 1977; Schooler, 15 in 1988).
- 2022: Mariners win an epic affair with the reigning World Series champion Braves. After surrendering a 5-run lead in the 9th inning, the Mariners get a game-tying home run from Julio Rodríguez, and a walk-off blast from Eugenio Suárez to win 8-7 and complete a series win against Atlanta.
- 2023: Julio Rodríguez hits his 30th home run to join the 30 home run, 30 stolen base club. He becomes the 44th player in MLB history, the 2nd Mariners player and just the 4th player age 22-or-younger to join the exclusive club.
