After months of ups, down, excitement, and frustration, the San Francisco Giants are finally playing their 162nd game of the season; unfortunately, there will be no 163rd.
They’re hosting the Colorado Rockies
in another game that’s meaningless in the standings for both teams. It isn’t entirely meaningless, though. It’s a chance for the Giants to end the season at exactly .500, if you’re into that. It’s a chance to send the fans home with one final happy memory. It’s a chance to say goodbye to some players who may not be on the team next year, which is probably why Wilmer Flores is starting and Bryce Eldridge is on the bench. It’s a chance for Rafael Devers to become the first MLB player since Justin Morneau in 2008 to play 163 games in a regular season.
Perhaps most importantly, it’s a chance for Logan Webb to accomplish some impressive personal achievements. Barring a very short start (and a very long one for Christopher Sánchez in Philly), Webb will lead the National League in innings pitched for the fourth consecutive year. And if he makes it through four innings, he’ll lead all of the Majors in innings pitched for the second time in his career. And with just a single strikeout, Webb will almost certainly accomplish something that absolutely no one saw coming: he’ll finish the year as the National League’s strikeout leader.
So that’s what to root for. In addition to, you know … a win.
For Webb, it’s his MLB-leading 34th start, and he’s 14-11 with a 3.30 ERA, a 2.67 FIP, and 216 strikeouts against just 46 walks in 201.2 innings. In his last outing, he gave up three runs in six innings against the St. Louis Cardinals.
For the Rockies, it’s right-hander McCade Brown. Brown, a 25-year old, makes the seventh start of both his season and his MLB career, and he’ll be looking for his first ever win. So far he’s 0-4 with a 7.54 ERA, a 6.23 FIP, and 21 strikeouts against 15 walks in 22.2 innings. Despite his poor numbers, he was phenomenal in his last start, giving up just one run in five innings against the Seattle Mariners, while striking out 10.
Enjoy the game, everyone. You’ll be sad when it’s all gone tomorrow.
Go Giants!
