Joel Pereira: 6
Despite the hosts’ utter dominance for large proportions of the game, Pereira was never called into urgent action or forced into a really good save. Did what he needed to do, and got a wink and a nod from me for going down ‘injured’ in the first half – or in other words: giving his team mates a bit of a breather.
Kelvin Abrefa: 6
Both he and Dorsett got given a torrid time of it by their respective wingers all evening, but Abrefa at least looked a bit brighter going forward – on the rare occasion that we managed to do
that.
Finley Burns: 6
There was one moment in the first half where he got battered by Mason Burstow in the air and I thought it could be a long evening for him. I don’t think he made any major mistakes, and the problems this evening came primarily from those playing in front of the back four.
Derrick Williams: 6
He’s for sure a short-term improvement on Stickland, who’s had a difficult start to the season, and I foresee him being a mainstay in this defence until Paudie O’Connor is back at least.
Jeriel Dorsett: 5
He won’t be the last defender in this league to have nightmares of Amario Cozier-Duberry that’s for sure. He got given a run around and looked vulnerable every time the Bolton man got the ball. A tough evening for him and one he’ll want to forget as soon as humanly possible.
Lewis Wing: 5
Spoiler alert: I haven’t rated any of our starting midfield three very highly.
Hunt has this odd tactic of making the left and right centre midfielders go out to press the full backs, meaning that if the full back manages to pop it into midfield – which happened a lot tonight – Wing is left with about three players to deal with. Still, too many times he jumped up early, leaving even more space behind for Bolton to work with. And when he did get the ball, he was uncharacteristically wasteful.
Liam Fraser: 5
He seems to have quickly established himself as one of Hunt’s trusted men, and you can see in isolation why he would start a game like tonight, but it just wasn’t his night.
I find it difficult to find an argument for playing both him and Savage at the same time, as our midfield loses a bit of guile and poise when that happens.
How open the midfield was tonight is more of a tactical problem than a personnel one but I still can’t rate him any higher than a five.
Charlie Savage: 5
I’m not judging an entire 90 minutes on one singular thing, but there was a moment in the first half where Charlie Savage miscued a clearance straight up into the air and threw his arms out in the air and started walking. Things like that just aren’t a very good sign, and very, very un-Charlie-Savage-like.
Redeemed himself a little in the second half with some eager running down the left-hand side – but something just felt off with him tonight for me.
Daniel Kyerewaa: 6
He was our brightest attacking spark, but for those who didn’t watch the game trust me that’s not saying much.
He definitely looks like a player who will cause more than a few problems for defences this year though, he just needs a bit of refining.
Mark O’Mahony: 5
I do feel sorry for him. I know there’s a lot of criticism of him flying about, but he’s clearly not a target man and yet we keep persevering with Pereira lumping every goal kick up to him.
It’s also very hard to judge a striker when the players behind him never anything remotely close to a half chance for him. It was yet another tough evening for him.
Kamari Doyle: 5
This should be Hunt’s sign to never play Doyle from the wing ever again. It’s just not his position, and that should’ve been evidently clear after his display against Portsmouth in central midfield.
He had little to no impact on the game, and topped off his evening with a cynical yellow card right before getting hooked.
Subs
Ben Elliott: 6
How he’s only got half an hour of football over the last two games staggers me. He looked like our brightest midfielder when he came on, and will surely be expecting a start on Saturday after what his team mates conjured up before him.
Mamadi Camara: 6
Added an injection of energy that we desperately needed and linked up nicely with Jacob and Savage down the left-hand side. Again, looked better than who he replaced.
Matty Jacob: N/A
The Cozier-Duberry threat was nullified somewhat when he came on, but as he came on post 80 minutes he gets a N/A.
Andre Garcia: N/A
I mean, he’s won us our first point of the season, so that’s got to count for at least something. His seemingly deflected shot found the net rather fortuitously, but he still made it happen. He would have got a 7/10 if he’d come on earlier, but as per TTE rules, late subs get an N/A.
We’re sticklers for the rules here at TTE Towers, even for players who score late equalisers.
Average: 5.53/10
