The Michigan Wolverines are back in action this weekend against Penn State after a much-needed bye week. After starting 3-0, the Wolverines seemed to be picking up some momentum before a stunning loss to Iowa on the final play of the game, following by an uninspiring 20-14 loss at Minnesota.
The Nittany Lions are also struggling, having lost three in a row, so something has to give this weekend. Here are a few predictions for the matchup.
Michigan won’t score a touchdown
Unfortunately after the Minnesota game, I have run out of positivity
to use on this team. I said after the Iowa loss defeats like that either deflate a season or inspire a team. What I saw against the Golden Gophers was a team that wasn’t bought in and wasn’t playing inspired football, so I got my answer.
Michigan’s offense at Minnesota was horrific. The team only scored two touchdowns, and one was scored by the defense. The one offensive touchdown came on a short field after the defense forced a turnover. Now remember, Minnesota just lost by 28 to Purdue and gave up more than 300 rushing yards. Michigan only picked up 79.
I know the transitive property doesn’t apply to football, but the Gophers stink, and sadly, I think our Wolverines stink even more. Penn State isn’t great either, but I think the Nittany Lions are a bigger challenge than Minnesota. Michigan does not find the end zone this weekend.
Bryce Underwood gets benched
I think this could be the game we see Tommy Carr get his shot. It looked like Bryce Underwood was starting to find his groove against Iowa, as he really did a great job in that game against a really good defense. However, the Minnesota game was the worst of his career, and that defense isn’t close to being good. The inconsistencies are maddening, and there will eventually have to be a change if it continues. This weekend might just be the time for that.
Penn State wins 17-6
Michigan is favored by nearly a touchdown in this one for some reason, but Penn State is going to be the team getting the win. Not only will the Nittany Lions win the game, but they will win by two scores. Like always, Michigan’s defense will do a good job keeping the game close, but a couple turnovers by the offense will give Penn State a short field and the opportunity to pull away late for a 17-6 victory.
