Liverpool looked set to enter the 2026-27 season in the midst of a defensive injury crisis, with Joe Gomez picking up an injury in the first game of pre-season and expected out through the start of the season while young centre halves Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are themselves still working back to full fitness after both missed much of last season with injuries.
It left the Reds with only 35-year-old captain Virgil van Dijk as a fit senior centre half with less than two weeks to go until the season
opener against Newcastle.
Fortunately for the Reds, over the past two weeks Barcelona and Uruguay captain Ronald Araújo unexpectedly became available. The 27-year-old was the club’s standout defender under former manager Xavi, but he struggled when asked to marshal Hansi Flick’s high line and his struggles over the past two seasons saw things get to the point where he was informed he would not be a regular starter this season.
The player was allowed to seek out a new home, and Liverpool jumped at the opportunity to get a veteran centre half counted as one of the best in the world two seasons ago in on loan. There is also a €55M purchase option the club could choose to trigger next summer if his loan goes well.
If it doesn’t, the ability to return Araújo to Barcelona next summer gives Liverpool an easy out and makes this a deal that fills a position of real need. It’s low risk for the Reds, and for Araújo it offers a much clearer path to playing time than at Barcelona and at least a chance for something like a redemption story.
