The Indianapolis Colts are now willing to trade star running back Jonathan Taylor, per a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Schefter adds in his report that the New York Giants are among the teams thought to have at least “some level of interest” in trading for Taylor. Schefter also lists the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers as teams believed to be interested in trading for Taylor.
It’s no secret that while new Giants head coach John Harbaugh likes the trio of
Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy, and Devin Singletary, he has coveted a “bellcow” running back.
The Giants reportedly pursued Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III in free agency and it was likewise reported that star Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love was tied with Arvell Reese at the top of their board. It was widely believed that the Giants would have drafted Love at fifth overall if he was still available.
One of the issues with the Giants’ backfield is that while they lack an explosive option out of the backfield, and Taylor has been one of the NFL’s most explosive runners. Last year he was tied for sixth in the NFL with 16 designed runs of 15+ yards, and was third in “breakaway” runs. He also led the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns to just two (2) fumbles last year.
Our own Ed Valentine wrote earlier this week that the Giants should capitalize on their opportunity to win the NFC East this year and go all-in on the 27-year old Taylor.
After a report that head coach John Harbaugh personally called Tennessee Titans ownership in an effort to get defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons, who landed with the Chicago Bears, you can expect the Giants to be aggressive in pursuit of Taylor.
The move would likely cost significant draft capital, possibly a first round pick to replace the one the Colts traded to the New York Jets. That’s real consideration oncern in a 2027 draft class that’s shaping up to be very talented and deep at a number of positions of need for the Giants. Acquiring Taylor would also require significant cap space and financial maneuvering.
However, the argument is that Taylor is among the very best runners in the NFL and could complete a true “three headed monster” with wide receiver Malik Nabers and tight end Isaiah Likely.
And frankly, if Taylor becomes the apple of Harbaugh’s eye, it becomes Joe Schoen’s job to do everything in his power to acquire the running back.
So what do you think Giants’ fans? Do you think the Giants are serious contenders for Taylor? And should they be?
