Marvin Schwäbe was one of many goalkeepers in Germany this past season, to have an excellent showing. While the Bundesliga is known for its fast pace, and high scoring matches, the goalkeeping was outstanding this season. One of those great performers was FC Köln’s Marvin Schwäbe. At the conclusion of his big season, he had big praise for a fellow goalkeeper.
In light of the big news in Germany that Manuel Neuer would be returning to Bayern Munich for another season, the Köln goalkeeper chimed in with
his thoughts on the announcement.
“As someone who idolized Manuel Neuer as a kid, I’m thrilled. Being able to face him for another season would be incredible. He’s a legend, as they say these days. ‘The GOAT.’ The league is lucky to be able to witness that for another year. He was a great role model, he changed the goalkeeping landscape. We trained a lot with our feet – that became part of goalkeeping. Since Neuer, we know that a goalkeeper should be able to do more than just make saves,” said Schwäbe about Manuel Neuer, per Tz’s Hanna Raif, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
It must be truly special to be able to play against your idol, and often frustrating, when your ideal is Manuel Neuer, a player who seems to defy age. While Neuer is not perfect, he is performing at a level that is almost unprecedented at his age.
Despite being a freak of nature at his age, is he the best choice for Germany and Bayern Munich at 40-years-old? Now that is a whole different conversation, and one that will continue to stir up debate when we see Germany in North America this summer.
