Bayern Munich stormed out of the gates this season by winning 16 of 18 Bundesliga matches to claim a big lead in the title race. In January, Bayern blew leads against Augsburg and Hamburg to drop points and give Dortmund an opening to jump back into contention.
Dortmund’s only Bundesliga loss came at the hands of Bayern, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olise. Dortmund is currently riding a six-game winning streak and trail Bayern by six points in the table.
In a recent interview (via BuliNews),
Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck gave an overly confident response that came across as a challenge to Bayern.
“Dortmund always have a great team, both offensively and defensively,” responded Dayot Upamecano (via @iMiaSanMia). “They’ve been very consistent this season. I always want to keep a clean sheet. But the most important thing for us is the three points. If we win and keep a clean sheet, that would be perfect for me. But that’s a bonus.”
Upamecano definitely took the high road but also gave the impression that Bayern expects to win every game by having self-imposed lofty expectations. Dortmund has only defeated Bayern once in the 15 attempts, a 2-0 result after Bayern had essentially conceded the title to Bayer Leverkusen.
