Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we’re talking about all things Mizzou Sports
Happy New Year, Mizzou fans! 2025 around Mizzou Athletics provided plenty of mixed results with highs and lows.
After back-to-back 10-win seasons under head coach Eli Drinkwitz — Tiger football recently finished an underwhelming 8-5 season with the Gator Bowl loss to Virginia. Though, if 8-5 is the “down year” under Drinkwitz, Mizzou’s program is in a relatively good spot. The attention now turns to the transfer portal in hopes of putting together
a CFP contending roster next season.
Men’s basketball returned to the NCAA Tournament despite the first-round loss to Drake and is bringing a top recruiting class under Dennis Gates … but as for this season … they’re currently in a bad spot entering conference play. As for women’s basketball … the future is looking bright under Kellie Harper as they’re off to an exciting and encouraging start.
After missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, Mizzou Softball will be looking to bounce back in a big way under Larissa Anderson, and Mizzou Baseball needs just something positive under Kerrick Jackson.
After a Sweet 16 appearance in Dawn Sullivan’s first season, Mizzou Volleyball couldn’t capitalize on the momentum and missed the NCAA Tournament — but after a recent contract extension — things are still heading in the right direction. And while Mizzou Wresting has taken a step back, Tiger Style remains a consistent, quality program under Brian Smith.
The 2025 calendar year, however, was highlighted by Mizzou Gymnastics’ run to the NCAA Championships under Shannon Welker. Another special season is expected under Welker as the Tigers come in at No. 7 in the preseason rankings as they open a much-anticipated year vs Iowa State on Sunday.
Overall, here’s hoping for a better 2026 calendar year for Mizzou Athletics all-around. It already begins later tonight with WBB’s SEC opener vs No. 2 Texas.

The offensive line is quickly becoming a spot of need this offseason for Drinkwitz & Co. as depth is at an all-time low.
Expect Mizzou to be busy at the OL position in the transfer portal.
In year one under Kellie Harper, Mizzou women’s basketball is already off to a hot start. At the end of non-conference play, the Tigers are sitting at 12-3 for their best record entering SEC play since 2022-23.
It’s been a good start for Mizzou WBB in year one of the Kellie Harper era …. but now the SEC gauntlet begins.
Mizzou just wrapped up a somewhat disappointing 8-5 season, and they’ll lose some key members that got them to those 8 wins. But there’s also a strong culture and roster platform in place, and Mizzou’s moves will primarily be made with an eye on winning in 2026.
Happy portal SZN. Let’s get weird.
Overall last week, we went 5-1 so our total record sits at a much more palatable 53-49. We’re not done yet though… we’ve got more playoff games and a couple more bowl games to pick to finish fully in the black. Let’s do it!
Nathan previews the College Football Playoff slate from a betting angle.
Now, in this current campaign, the Tigers have gone 6-6 through the 2025 schedule and currently rank No. 17 in the nation. There has been an inability to compete against top teams, but there is time to make a season turnaround in 2026.
Colin takes a look at what Tiger Style needs to do in order to turn another struggling season around.
The team fell just short of the NCAA Tournament due to several key losses in the final month of the season. With the transfer portal in full swing and a Dawn Sullivan extension announced, there was much to discuss. This was originally produced in podcast form, but has been transcribed and abbreviated for the main site:
Closing thoughts from a disappointing volleyball season.
Still, while there is no easy schedule in the SEC this is one of the more manageable slates out there. It’s tricky and there are some near-guarantee losses on the docket but, in this era, if you go 10-2 in the SEC you are a serious contender for the Playoff.
Let’s see what next season brings with hopefully a revamped roster.
This offseason, the staff finds itself with quite a few holes to plug in the roster, and a decent chunk of change to do it. But the question is… which areas of the roster do they prioritize? So this week’s Reacts question is… if you were the staff, what position would you prioritize in the transfer portal?
Plenty of work for Mizzou to do in the portal, but what position should they prioritize?
