Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is expected to remain in charge through the end of the season, but his long-term future will come under formal review this summer, and his sacking is sounding likelier by the day.
According to recent reporting from the north-east, Newcastle’s hierarchy plan to conduct a full end-of-season performance assessment, evaluating results both on and off the pitch. While there are currently no plans to dismiss Howe immediately, sources indicate that the summer could prove
decisive.
Chief executive David Hopkinson made Howe’s job security and future clear on Tuesday.
“Eddie’s our manager. I expect to have a great run to the end of the season here and we’ll talk about the future when it’s time. Right now, we’re focused on this season’s competition, Hopkinson said. “We are not looking to make a change at the moment. We are not having those conversations. We are still in the midst of the season.
“Right now, we are focused on the seven matches we have remaining and not distracting ourselves with speculation about what we may or may not do in the summer. Right now, all of us have only got so much bandwidth and we are focused on this season and finishing strongly.”
Howe seems to still have support and one last chance at proving his worth, but a bad final stretch of results to close the season could easily see him axed.
For now, the expectation is that Howe remains in place into the summer, when a proper review will take place and he’ll learn his fate.
