The Triple Gold club is one of the more prestigious unofficial awards in the sport of hockey. There are 30 players and one coach who can say they’ve won all of the Stanley Cup, Olympic gold and World championship titles.
Crosby and the Canadians are trying to win the latter event, their quest continuing today at 2pm eastern against Finland in the semifinals. The Canucks downed Tommy Novak, Connor Clifton and the Americans by a 4-0 final score in the quarterfinals, preventing Matthew Tkachuk from continuing on his
quest for his third leg of the Triple Gold. The winner of Canada/Finland will be a heavy favorite over either of the other teams in the semis (Norway and Switzerland),
It’s been all smiles and success so far for the Pens’ captain and Canada. Crosby is second among Canadian scorers with 10 points (1g+9A) in eight games.
If Canada is able to win the event, Crosby will stretch his achievement even further to become only the fourth player in history to go “Double triple” by winning each of the three events two times a piece. The others in that even more select club are Peter Forsberg, Igor Larionov and Slava Fetisov.
At this point of his career, Crosby has so many achievements and accomplishments and even though his injury prevented him from competing for another Olympic gold earlier this winter, he’s got the opportunity to end the season on a high note while becoming one of the most accomplished international players that the game has ever seen.
