Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we are talking about Mizzou Football!
With college football reaching Week 11, the College Football Playoff committee dropped its first official ranking, putting the Tigers at No. 22.
Pretty expected,
being in the 18-24 range, but there’s plenty of opportunity for Mizzou to jump up as it faces No. 3 Texas A&M this major playoff implications on the line.
There’s a bunch of time for the Tigers to move up in the rankings, but they’ll likely have to win out or close to if they want a chance at the College Football Playoff
We have more discussion on football and basketball, diving into prospects, visits and PFF grades in the Rock M+ forums. Most recently, we’re getting to know our subscribers in the basketball forums.

On the women’s side, the Kellie Harper era has officially started with a 78-71 win over Central Arkansas. A nice bounce back after the exhibition loss to Maryville. Illinois State transfer had another double-double performance with a team-leading 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Questionable debut showing of the Kellie Harper era but it’s early, plenty of time for the Tigers to get on track.
Players of Jones natural ability don’t come around every day, but his football ability still needs a bit of work. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him get some special teams reps early on because of how fast and strong he can be, but he’ll need to fine tune his ability as a coverage corner if he wants to see defensive snaps earlier than his second season.
I’m excited to see what Drinkwitz — or Mizzou’s next coach — does with Brody Jones as a project player.
It’s a good thing that this defense is so good because Missouri’s offensive line has finally shown that it is not elite and Missouri is rolling out a 3rd-string freshman quarterback for the rest of the year. I’m not saying this is a 2015 redux but…I’d start preparing – and rooting for – games that can stay under 20 points per side. And, yes, this defense is built to do that.
Plenty of time for Matt Zollers to make his name at Mizzou, but in the meantime, keeping a strong defensive core is key for this Tigers’ team.
I fully expect that Anthony Robinson and Mark Mitchell will play better games. So if either guy is going to deliver a stinker, let it be in a game where they’re favored by 19, and Jayden Stone and Jacob Crews and Luke Northweather combine to make 7 of 9 threes.
I think this was a big factor. The fact that Mark Mitchell and Anthony Robinson didn’t play their best games — that Mizzou fans know they can play — and the Tigers still won and the newcomers played well is really exciting for Missouri fans.
Moving on to women’s basketball, we’ll start with this photo of Ma’Riya Vincent rising to take a shot. I love here that Vincent is sandwiched between two opponents and has her arm raised ready to take a shot while Central Arkansas’ Julianna Gibson reaches to block her. If we want to get into color theory, this is a perfect example of complementary colors: purple and yellow (or gold, if we want to get technical). Think of the Vikings or the Lakers. It’s a really nice color combination here.
Serious thought going into all these photos. And they are awesome! You MUST check this out!
Tiger Talk Notes and Quotes: Texas A&M edition
On Zollers’ mechanics: “He’s got a quick release. He’s a really, really good golfer, so he creates tension on his T-spine (thoracic spine) by separating his hips, and that’s what you see with a lot of the really good NFL quarterbacks. He creates hip displacement, so he’s got some natural mechanics. He’s a 300-yard driver off the deck [in golf], so he understands how to create tension on the T-spine and cut it loose.”
It is officially Matt Zollers season Tigers’ fans! I’m excited to see what he can do, and this is just a prelude likely for years to come!
Over at Rock M+ we have more Mizzou football discussion in forums ahead of the bye week, and basketball discussion ahead of the season.
