Dear Roker Report,
I just caught myself checking this weekend’s Liverpool and Manchester United fixtures to see if we’ll overtake them with a win at West Ham.
I’ve supported Sunderland for over five decades and this season is just crackers in the way it just keeps surprising me.
I survived a massive stroke the day we won the playoff final and am starting to wonder if I actually died and went to heaven.
Alan Haddick
Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, Alan. Thank you for your letter — and I hope you’re well on the way to a full recovery after your stroke.
It’s certainly been quite the season for Sunderland so far, and with two positive results in our next two games, we’ll be ideally placed to mount a strong challenge towards the end of the campaign and to finish as highly as we possibly can.
Interesting times to come, for sure!
Dear Roker Report,
I just want to draw your attention to a few flaws in the “ticket resale” option, as the Sunderland website stated that gift vouchers could be used on any credit that is in your ticket resale account.
I’ve since been made aware that the gift vouchers aren’t available to be used in the club shop and can only be used on premium gift vouchers or a stadium tour gift voucher — neither of which I intend to use, and I now have credit on my balance which I have no way of using.
Had I known this was the case, I wouldn’t have put my ticket on resale and I doubt I’ll be doing it in the future if this is the case. I found this very misleading, as nowhere on the website does it state that the gift vouchers can only be used on the above items.
It clearly states “Gift voucher” on the “What can I buy with my credit?” page. The credit can’t be used against season tickets either, if paid via direct debit. What started out as a decent option for supporters now looks to be pointless to the majority of those who use it!
This has now been changed on the website, with the club basically admitting their mistake of misleading supporters.

Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, Matthew. Thank you for getting in touch.
It seems that there’s clearly been some form of miscommunication on behalf of the club which has led to confusion on this issue, but nowadays, we receive far fewer letters at Roker Report expressing dissatisfaction at customer service standards and the like.
It does seem to have improved a great deal but this has obviously been an unfortunate one — and hopefully it won’t be repeated.
Dear Roker Report,
I’m a New York City guy and I started watching the documentary during Covid.
I fell in love with this team and players like Luke O’Nien, Dan Neil and Anthony Patterson. This was the greatest underdog story and seeing the revival of this team was made so much sweeter because of me first watching that documentary.
I’ve been following the team since then — much to the dismay of my friends that include Arsenal, Spurs and Leeds fans.
CJ Ferranti
Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, CJ. Thank you for your letter.
It’s great to hear that you’ve been following Sunderland’s progress and elevation back to the Premier League — and hopefully the Lads can make even more unforgettable memories during the seasons to come!
