Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson met the media earlier today, and there wasn’t anything said about nickelback Kyler Gordon, who is still on the PUP list. But there was an injury update sent out by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“Bears standout CB Kyler Gordon, who is on IR with a calf injury, is away from the team working with his own trainer to accelerate recovery, sources say,” Rapoport shared on social media. “The plan is for Gordon to return a few weeks into the season and begin practicing
shortly thereafter. Some optimism here.”
He had a follow-up post saying, “This has been a challenging recovery, and sometimes players work best honing in with their own people. That seems to be the case here. Barring a setback, Gordon should be back sooner rather than later.”
Those two reports feel a lot like they came from Kyler’s representation, so you can have fun interpreting the subtext.
Ben Johnson was asked if presumed starting nickelback Malik Muhammad II would be targeted by the opposition since he’s a rookie. Ben said, of course, as would all rookies on the roster.
For what it’s worth, the Bears’ first depth chart, which is not official, lists Cam Lewis as the number one nickel.
