Week five of the college football season was full of exciting last minute contests. The Mountain West also had no shortage of exciting moments and great performances, especially on the offensive side of the ball. With that being said, let’s take a look at the top performances from week five.
Offensive Player of the Week
Micah Alejado (Hawaii)
The freshman quarterback had his best performance of the year in an exciting 44-35 win over Air Force. Alejado completed 35 of 47 passes for 457 yards and three touchdowns. Alejado took advantage
of Air Force’s inexperienced secondary and was able to lead the Rainbow Warriors to their fourth victory of the season.
Defensive Player of the Week
Boen Phelps (Boise State)
The walk-on linebacker has proven to be an important part of the Boise State defense the past few weeks. He had the best game of the year in the Broncos 47-14 victory over Appalachian State. Phelps returned an interception for a touchdown and added six tackles.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Kansei Matsuzawa (Hawaii)
The Tokyo Toe continued his perfect season and his three field goals proved to be the difference in Hawaii’s victory over Air Force. Matsuzawa has now connected on all 16 of his field goal attempts this season.
Newcomer of the Week
Jack Layne (New Mexico)
The Lobo rushing attack was slowed down by New Mexico State, but Idaho transfer quarterback Jack Layne rose to the occasion. Layne finished the game completing 23 of 30 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns in New Mexico’s 38-20 win over rival New Mexico State.
Freshman of the Week
Oscar Doyle (Boise State)
The freshman punter was spectacular for Boise State this past weekend. Doyle had two punts downed inside the 20 and averaged 41 yards on his four punts.
