On paper, Germany appears to be red hot entering the World Cup.
After dispatching the USMNT in a rugged 2-1 win, the German national team has won nine games in a row.
That’s good, right?
Well…about that.
Germany did have an impressive 4-0 win last weekend against Finland, but it’s 2-1 victory over the USMNT was very shaky. Heading into the World Cup, the squad suffered a key injury (Lennart Karl) and put in a performance that might leave a lot of room for doubt.
With these nine consecutive wins, though, it is the most the Germans have had since 1979/80 (!?). Is this a sign of things to come or will the Germans be unable to live up to the standard it has set for itself?
That is the big question and likely the one that will make or break Julian Nagelsmann’s tenure as head coach. If he can scrape wins and push the squad in the Round of 16, anything can happen. If this squad flames out in the group stage again, the coaching search might begin once more.
