We were so close to a perfect season opener. How fitting would it have been if, after Bayern Munich had ended the very successful 2025/26 season by winning the DFB-Pokal against VfB Stuttgart, their first match of the season was also against Die Schwaben? It would have been a perfect way to spiritually carry Bayern’s 2025/26 season form into the new season. Alas, the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against Borussia Dortmund was Bayern’s first game of the season. Stuttgart will be the second, though its’
status as the Bundesliga opener likely makes it more significant than the clash against the Black and Yellows.
Bayern’s players are already looking forward to the big clash against last season’s Bundesliga 4th placed team, with right back Konrad Laimer expressing his admiration of Stuttgart while remaining bullish of Bayern’s chances of winning.
“VfB is a good team. You can see they’ve done a very good job in the past few years,” Laimer noted (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “They’ve been playing good football and have been successful. We’re looking forward to the game, we want to play our football and show how good we are. We won’t do any less than last season, on the contrary we’ll do more.”
It is promising that Bayern’s players are looking to build on the success of last season. That will have to start by overcoming the opponent Bayern beat 14:3 over 4 games on aggregate last season.
