Barcelona are closing in on the league title
and currently sit nine points clear of Real Madrid with just seven games left to play. There’s a scenario where Barcelona could be crowned champions before they face Madrid in the next Clasico at Camp Nou which has led to speculation Los Blancos don’t want to give their bitter rivals the traditional guard of honor.
Eric Garcia has been asked about the scenario and whether he’d prefer to receive the guard of honor against Madrid or win the Clasico to seal
the title.
Here’s what he had to say:
“First, we’re going to win it, which is the reward for consistency. We’re doing things right. Being knocked out of the Copa del Rey and the Champions League is tough and it hurts, but it doesn’t diminish the work we’re doing in La Liga and with the Supercopa title,” he told reporters at an event on Monday.
“If Real Madrid has to give us a guard of honor, it means we’ve already won La Liga. And then the question of what I prefer (whether to win it against Real Madrid or receive them as champions) is answered.
“I don’t really control the ‘what ifs’. But when a rival beats you in a final or wins a title, the least you can do is show respect. If it were up to us, we would do it no matter who the rival was. If we find ourselves in that situation, we’ll see what happens.”
Barcelona are due to play Celta, Getafe and Osasuna in La Liga before Madrid visit on May 10th.
