The Pittsburgh Steelers nearly completed an 11-point fourth-quarter comeback against the Cleveland Browns, but a last-minute field goal from Andre Szmyt allowed the Browns to escape with a victory and get to 3-1 on the season.
The Steelers had a dream start to the game. They forced the Browns to go three-and-out, and then embarked on a 17-play drive that took nearly 10 minutes off the clock and culminated with a Roman Wilson touchdown on a jet touch pass. However, the offense would stall out and the Browns would take
advantage.
After an interception thrown by Rodgers to Denzel Ward, the Browns turned it into points with a 28-yard touchdown run by Jaleel McLaughlin. The Steelers then went three-and-out, and the Browns marched down the field in just four plays and Quinshon Judkins ran it in from two yards out to make it 14-7. The Steelers then put a drive together and got into field goal range, but Chris Boswell was unable to make a 48-yard field goal. The Browns then drove down the field and scored another touchdown to make it 21 unanswered points, with Harold Fannin scoring on a two-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-7. Boswell did connect on a field goal at the end of the half to make it 21-10 at halftime.
In the second half, the Steelers’ defense turned things around. After allowing 21 points in the first two quarters, Pittsburgh allowed just three in the second half and had two takeaways. T.J. Watt forced a fumble on Deshaun Watson, recovering it to give Pittsburgh the ball. They would then punt after five plays. On the ensuing Browns drive, Robert Spears-Jennings picked off Watson after Jack Sawyer tipped the pass. The Steelers then turned that into a touchdown on a vintage Rodgers throw. Scrambling to his right Rodgers flung the ball 21 yards to Darnell Washington. The Steelers went for two and were held out of the end zone, so the game remained 21-16. Cleveland answered with a field goal to make it a 24-16 game. Rodgers then led an eight-play, 80-yard drive, finishing with a Pat Freiermuth touchdown reception, but Pittsburgh still trailed by two. After a Jared Verse penalty, the ball moved to the one yard-line, where Mike McCarthy dialed up an Aaron Rodgers sneak to tie the game up.
Unfortunately for the offense, the defense then allowed the Browns to march down the field and get into field goal range, going 36 yards on seven plays and setting up Andre Szmyt for the game-winning 56-yard field goal. Rodgers had one last heave that was picked off by Grant Delpit to seal the 27-24 win for the Browns.
Rodgers finished the game 22-of-40 for 299 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He and DK Metcalf had their best game, collectively of the season, connecting five times for 115 yards. Ultimately, though, a missed kick from Boswell, a brutal showing from the offensive line (five sacks on Rodgers), and a defense that couldn’t tackle or shut the door in the biggest moments leads to the Steelers falling to 2-2.
