The San Francisco 49ers can’t seem to shake the inevitable injury bug. So far this year, that injury bug has honed in on the wide receiver room. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported yet another injury, although this one isn’t as serious. According to Schefter, Russell Gage will miss seven to ten days with a sprained MCL.
Gage joins Brandon Aiyuk (ACL), Jauan Jennings (calf), Jordan Watkins (high-ankle sprain), Jacob Cowing (hamstring), and DeMarcus Robinson (suspension) as wide receivers currently injured
on the roster.
Ricky Pearsall has to feel like the Will Smith meme from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, where he’s looking around by himself, wondering where everybody went. Pearsall reportedly escaped an injury at practice this week.
The healthy wideouts for the preseason finale include Pearsall, Robbie Chosen, Terique Owens, Isaiah Hodgins, Junior Bergen, Malik Turner, and Malik Knowles. The latter two were recently signed, and Chosen was added to the roster earlier in August.
Determining which wideouts will make the initial roster, who will go on the PUP, and whether to keep six plus receivers and skimp at another position won’t be easy. The 49ers ‘final 53-man roster will likely change and be determined on a week-to-week basis, at least for the first month or so of the season.
