San Diego Wave announced the signing of 24-year-old University of Virginia midfielder Lia Godfrey to a two-year contract through the 2027 season.
“We are thrilled to welcome (Godfrey) to San Diego,” said Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton. “(Godfrey) has proven to be one of the most exciting midfielders at the collegiate level as a consistent difference-maker, both as a creator and a goal scorer. She will add quality and competitiveness to our Club, and we are looking forward to supporting
her development as she begins her professional career.”
Godfrey is the second collegiate signing announced by the Wave this week joining Mia Van Zanten in also holding a two-year contract with contract options for 2027 and 2028.
Godfrey played five seasons at UVA earning four separate All-American honors from the United Soccer Coaches organization, twice with the first team and twice on the second team. The midfielder appeared in 107 matches notching 28 goals and 33 assists during her time with the Cavaliers.
“I’m so excited. This is a one in a lifetime opportunity, and I’ve seen and heard so many things about the club,” said Godfrey. “I can’t wait to get started.”
Godfrey has also appeared for the USYNT across multiple levels for many years and appearances. She last made an appearance internationally in 2023, but saw her season cut short due to a knee injury that kept her out the entire season.
In 2016 Godfrey made history as the youngest player ever in United States history to compete in the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the under-17 team at just 14 years old.
The Wave have seen major roster changes during this offseason headlined by the departure of two of San Diego’s longest-tenured players, Kailen Sheridan and Makenzy Robbe.
Sheridan especially shocked many in the San Diego area as she was still under contract through at least the 2026 season. The two sides decided to “mutually agree” to terminate the contract rather than a trade or transfer to another team.
