After a spirited opening salvo, home side FC Köln could only sit back and weather the Bavarian counter-barrage as they succumbed to an eventual 4-1 defeat in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
“Congratulations to FC Bayern on a well-deserved victory,” Köln coach Lukas Kwasniok said afterwards in comments captured by FCBayern.com. “We managed to challenge FC Bayern for 30 minutes and then took a 1-0 lead. We engaged them in many aerial duels. After conceding the equalizer and then the second goal in four
minutes, it became very difficult. The game was effectively over when they made it 3-1.”
Köln certainly put up as good a fight as any team has this season against the Bavarians — that’s include Premier League giants Chelsea in the Champions League (Bayern dispatched the Blues, 3-1 in September). Prior to the match, Kwasniok spoke of the difficulty in finding any weaknesses in Vincent Kompany’s side. But he and his team did a fine job of trying.
Bayern Munich traveled to Cologne for a midweek DFB-Pokal tilt with FC Köln.
Heading into the match, the Bavarians were riding high, but the squad knew that FC Köln would not be an easy out in front of its home crowd. Ultimately, Bayern Munich pulled out a 4-1 victory doing exactly what they have done to every other opponent it has had of late — wear them down and pounce.
