Happy Friday, everyone, and now that the free agency market is open following the end of the qualifying offer window, things are about to get very exciting around baseball over the coming months. It should
be interesting to see what teams make an effort to compete next year (will the Dodgers try to make a trade with the Tigers to add Skubal to their roster?) and which teams won’t make any effort at all (looking at you Tigers, don’t disappoint us).
There will be plenty of speculation and contract-watching, so we will have a lot to keep us busy.
In the meantime, we’ll get into some tidbits from the AFL, some coaching updates for the Tigers, the NL Silver Slugger winners, and a few more bits of news from around baseball. Let’s get right into it.
Detroit Tigers News
- This makes sense for both Flaherty and the Tigers. While Jack was somewhat inconsistent through the season, when he was good, he was very good.
- Some coaching adjustments we will see in the new year:
- Never overlook the stamp of approval from Pitching Ninja.
- Speaking of Skubal, he spent some of his offseason watching the AFL.
- Can’t wait to see this guy in the majors.
MLB News
- Bruce Bochy might be heading back to San Francisco, but only in an advisory role.
- Free agency is wide open! FanGraphs has a list of the top 50 free agents.
- Jay Jaffe looks at the Hall of Fame case for Dale Murphy.
- Craig Stammen is the new manager of the San Diego Padres.
- These 13 players were tendered qualifying offers. And on that note, who opted out?
- The Rockies are narrowing in on Paul DePodesta to head their baseball operations.
- Don Mattingly has decided to leave his role as bench coach with the Blue Jays, but is open to managing elsewhere.
- How did Mike Trout fall out of the spotlight after long being considered one of the best players of a generation?
- Is Juan Soto one of the all-time greats?
- The rest of the NL Silver Slugger winners.
