The NFL Draft is just 10 days away, and unless the Seattle Seahawks make a ton of trades, they’re not going to be featuring all that much this year. At the moment, they have a league-low four draft selections and only one on Day 3 (Rounds 4-7). Not exactly scintillating stuff when you’re champing at the bit waiting for the Seahawks to be on the clock and for ESPN to immediately cut to a commercial break.
Once upon a time, the draft was just two days (Saturday-Sunday) and started at 9 am PT. Twenty
years ago, opening day would be the first three rounds, while the last four rounds would start at 8 am PT on Sunday. Pick times used to be obnoxiously long, with the 2007 draft somehow running six hours long just for Round 1. Go back another decade and the draft was once more than seven rounds and there weren’t any fans in attendance.
The modern NFL Draft is a made-for-television spectacle: Thursday is the opening round and usually doesn’t run but about three hours and change, Friday is Rounds 2-3, and Saturday is Rounds 4-7. This year’s draft is going to be so big for the city of Pittsburgh that kids will have to learn remotely instead of at school.
Our discussion topic for today is how much of an NFL Draft junkie you are. Do you only tune in when the Seahawks are up? Do you just watch Round 1? What about Rounds 2-3? Are you bold enough to sit through all of Day 3 when the talking heads barely pay attention to what’s going on and they don’t even go to the stage for the pick announcements?
By default, I have to watch at least the first three rounds of the draft, pick-by-pick. Once we get to Day 3 I’m in sporadic viewing mode as long as the Seahawks aren’t picking.
