Queretaro got the surprise of the weekend by going to Guadalajara and getting a 2-0 victory over Chivas. Queretaro took advantage of some terrible defensive mistakes by Chivas that ended their unbeaten record at home in the Apertura 2026. Chivas maintains their 2nd place in the standing but they will probably lose it to America. Both teams will be out for the FIFA break next week. When actions returns, Chivas will play in the Clasico Tapatio against Atlas while Queretaro will host Atlante.
The 1st
half started with Chivas having Oscar Whalley get the start at goalkeeper as Raul Rangel was with the National team as well as Roberto Alvarado. A bad back pass from Chivas allowed Mateo Coronel to get into the area but his lobbed shot went right to Whalley, wasting a great chance. A cross into the area was headed wide by Santiago Sandoval. A horrendous mistake by Luis Romo, who would lose the ball in his area allowed Ali Avila to get the ball and get off a right footed shot past Whalley to score and give Queretaro the surprising 1-0 lead. It was an awful mistake by Romo, who failed to control the ball and then allowed Enzo Gimenez to poke the ball towards Avila, whose close range shot was easier to make than miss. Brian Gutierrez got off a good right footed shot from outside the area that went just wide. A bad back pass from Romo almost turned into trouble but Whalley was able to bounce the ball off Avila and it went wide. Another bad mistake from Chivas came when Whalley tried to clear the ball but whiffed on his shot but was able to clear the ball before Avila could get to it. Off a corner kick, the cross into the area was failed to be cleared by Whalley and the ball bounced around but Queretaro couldn’t get off a header into the empty net as Chivas’ defense cleared the ball. A right footed shot from outside the area from Hugo Camberos forced Queretaro’s goalkeeper, Guillermo Allison to make a good save. A cross into the area was just of reach of Sandoval. The halftime whistle blew and Queretaro took their surprising lead to the break.
The 2nd half started with Chivas subbing out Brian Gutierrez and Ruben Gonzalez for Angel Sepulveda and Richard Ledezma. A cross into the area was volleyed by Ricaro Marin but Allison made a great save. From outside the area Romo got off a great shot that forced a great save by Allison. Queretaro subbed out Bayron Duarte for Carlos Villanueva. A cross into the area would fall to Carlo Adriano, who got off a good left footed shot that Whalley would make a great save on. After getting the ball in the area, Marin got off a turn around left footed shot that Allison saved. Chivas subbed out Kevin Castañeda for Efrain Alvarez. A cross into the area was headed from close range by Sepulveda into the net but it was called off for a foul by Sandoval. Off a counter, Adriano got off a right footed shot that Whalley saved. Queretaro subbed out Iker Benit for Bernardo Parra. Off a counter attack, a great run from Gimenez ended with a cross into the area where Mateo Coronel got to it and got off a left footed shot past Whalley to score and give Queretaro the 2-0 lead. It was a shocking result especially at home against a Chivas side that had been having a good Apertura 2026.Chivas subbed out Hugo Camberos for Jordan Carrillo. Carrillo got off a right footed shot in the area that went wide. Queretaro subbed out Mateo Coronel and Carlo Adriano for Alejandro Alcala and Paulo Victor. Chivas subbed out Daniel Aguirre for Luis Rey. A cross into the area was headed by Sepulveda but deflected just wide. A longball found Santiago Homenchenko, who got dropped by Omar Govea, who would earn a red card as a last man foul. With 10 players and no much time left, the match was over for Chivas.
Queretaro’s great Apertura 2026 continued with what should be their most important result so far by defeating Chivas. Queretaro hadn’t defeated Chivas in Guadalajara since 2014 and they did so deservedly, taking advantage of a terrible performance by Chivas. Chivas made key mistake in defense and they paid for them especially the first goal which was all because of a bad mistake by Romo. Chivas’ had nothing up top even when they controlled possession and the defeat was a fair result for a Queretaro side that had a better plan of attack. Chivas has now hit a skid and they will need to bounce back as they face Club America in a friendly in the United States before returning home to face off against city rivals Atlas in an “away” edition of the Clasico Tapatio. Queretaro will return by hosting Atlante, another side that has had a surprising Apertura 2026.
