Good morning, Broncos Country!
Some games don’t need a message.
Today is one of those.
The Denver Broncos host the Kansas City Chiefs today. It’s a divisional game. It’s a shot at a redo. The AFC West lead and playoff positioning are at stake.
There isn’t much that Broncos head coach Sean Payton has to say. At the same time, while a Denver win today would be nice, it’s also not the end of the season if they lose.
So for Payton, it’s a big game, but there will be bigger ones.
“I think that’s right. I think everyone understands it’s
a divisional game. Here it is on the schedule. We’ve done a good job just compartmentalizing. Way back when, you put the season into quarters. We don’t do that. I know who we play this week, next week. Then there’s a bye. Then after that … It’s a divisional game, and those are important. That’s what it is.”
The other factor in the messaging is the fact that the Broncos got flogged by Kansas City in Week 1.
“Yes, no question,” Payton said to the media earlier this week. “In other words, these guys are grown men. They recognize the things we didn’t do well, offensively, defensively.”
Now it’s just a matter of correcting those issues and putting the team in a better position to have success.
“I’ve watched it several times,” Broncos quarterback Bo Nix said to the media. “I watched it after immediately and then watched it again this week to prepare. It definitely doesn’t leave me excited with how that game ended. There are a lot of things we can focus on and correct. What I’ve learned over the past is you can’t play the same game twice.
“That’s going to be a completely different game than what Sunday’s game is going to be, and you have to play it as such. You have to show up with a different mentality and just compete and just do what you can to have a different outcome than last time.”
