At the time Luis Díaz made his move from Liverpool FC to Bayern Munich on the heels of winning the Premier League title with Arne Slot’s side, the Colombian winger certainly had his skeptics as to whether or not he was worth the €70-million price tag the Bundesliga champions paid for him.
When Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur to signing him back in the winter of 2022, Jürgen Klopp signed him from FC Porto for a fee of 40 million euros, but the 41 goals and 23 assists he tallied from 148 appearances
across all competitions for The Reds significantly helped his market value increase. He also collected a Premier League title, two EFL Cups, Community Shield and a FA Cup along the way before it was time to move on to Bayern.
Fast forward to now, and Díaz is having a remarkable maiden season in the Bundesliga. He’s already tallied 19 goals and 15 assists from 32 appearances across all competitions and has looked to have formed quite a formidable chemistry with Harry Kane and Michael Olise at the tip of the spear of Bayern’s attack.
In a recent Sky Sport interview, Lucho reflected on his decision to move to Bayern from Liverpool this past summer and explained that it was really a no brainer to accept the opportunity to join such a massive European club. “When FC Bayern approached me, I knew from the very first moment that I wanted to make this move. It filled me with pride because I’d known the club for a long time and knew what to expect there. It was a good decision – a decision for an incredible and fantastic team. And when you arrive somewhere new, you naturally want to give your best and feel comfortable where you are,” he explained (via @iMiaSanMia).
Coming from the streets of Barrancas as a young boy to eventually making his break to Porto in Portugal to lighting up the Premier League with Liverpool, Díaz has shown no signs of difficulties breaking into different leagues in different countries with different playing styles. There’s a natural air of excitement every time he’s on the ball with his pace, creative flare, and confidence on the ball. He’s clearly a player who’s enjoying his football, which is part in parcel of how he’s continually been able to enjoy life.
“Being happy is the most important thing for a player and his family. It was exactly the right decision to come here. I knew that I would be joining an incredibly great group of footballers and a club with excellent infrastructure and a fantastic training ground. I had no doubt about that. The most difficult thing for me and my family was, and still is, certainly the language… but I knew that I would fit in very well here, that I would contribute to the team’s success – just as I had done before in Liverpool. So FC Bayern placed their trust in me, and I’m trying to repay that trust on the pitch,” the Colombian international said.
It’s safe to say that Díaz has more than repaid the trust Bayern has shown in him thus far and he shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
