Commanders head coach Dan Quinn announced that receiver Stefon Diggs would be held out of Wednesday’s practice, leading up to Sunday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He quickly followed that up with the fact that he’ll be a full go on Thursday.
This isn’t related to the shot Diggs took to his hand during a Week 6 loss to San Francisco. While he didn’t say so expressly, this seems like veteran workload management. Diggs was formally listed with hand and hamstring issues, but was also designated
as being given veteran rest.
The Commanders have done things like this in the past, to help veterans be fresh and at their best on game day.
That’s the most important thing for a player like Diggs, who will be instrumental with Terry McLaurin out for the season with a torn patellar tendon.
Defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw was also held out of practice, and Quinn made it seem like a longshot that he’ll play against the Eagles. He was formally listed with a knee injury. Tight end John Bates didn’t practice with a shoulder injury. Those are injuries to monitor, considering the important roles they play.
Receiver Treylon Burks (foot) and defensive lineman Charles Omenihu (groin/ankle) were limited. Quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee) was a full participant.
Defensive lineman Johnny Newton’s 21-day practice window was opened on Wednesday, following his formal designation to return off injured reserve.
