The Bundesliga trophy, also known as the Meisterschale, has been literally expanded to accommodate its newest champions.
According to multiple reports, including from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), the trophy’s outer ring was replaced by a wider one. The reason is that every single German champion gets their name engraved on the trophy after becoming German champions, but after Bayern Munich won it last year, there was no more room for the name of this season’s champions.
As a result, the Deutsche
Fußball-Liga (DFL) had to commission an expansion of the shield-like trophy. The new ring of the trophy will now have space for the next thirty German champions. The champions of this Bundesliga season will have the honor(?) of being the first name on the new ring.
Bayern Munich could theoretically win the Bundesliga this coming weekend, should they better Borussia Dortmund’s result. Dortmund travel to TSG Hoffenheim, while Bayern welcome VfB Stuttgart to Munich. Even if they do seal the title this weekend, though, the trophy will not be presented until the final match of the season, which is a home game against FC Köln.
