Yes, Luis Díaz, Michael Olise, and Harry Kane all contributed directly to goals in the first leg against Real Madrid in the Champions League. Díaz scored Bayern’s first, while Kane was assisted by Olise for Bayern’s second.
Aside from the goals, Olise completed an insane 85% of his passes (as a winger!). He completed 4 dribbles, 5 recoveries, 2
defensive contributions, and 3 key passes. And he gave Álvaro Carreras a night to forget.
As for Harry Kane… an otherworldly shot from outside the box was placed perfectly to hit the bottom right corner. A brilliant goal that once again showed the world the magic the Bayern hitman is capable of producing. His defensive effort was excellent throughout the game, as were his contributions to the buildup.
The whole “Kane and Olise don’t perform against big teams” schtick does not hold water anymore. It never did to start with, since the players have been brilliant in numerous big games this season, including, but not limited to, Chelsea, RB Leipzig, PSG, Borussia Dortmund, Sporting Lisbon, PSV, Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart, Atalanta, and now, Real Madrid.
But yes, the Bernabéu is arguably club football’s biggest stage, especially on UCL nights, and Bayern’s front line delivered, which puts all silly doubts and counter-arguments to bed.
It is time to accept that this front three is historic, and this season is historic. Very soon, conversations need to be had on whether this is actually the best season a front 3 has ever had in club football history.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. There is a second leg in Munich to wrap up. Perhaps after that, we revisit this.
