Duke traveled West to Berkeley, California for a night game against the Cal Golden Bears and came away with an impressive 45-21 victory to improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in ACC play. Duke spotted Cal a two
touchdowns lead at 21-7 before reeling off 38 unanswered points in a dominant performance in all three phases of the game. The defense sacked Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele six times and intercepted four passes while the offense rolled up 443 yards total offense. The Blue Devils offense converted multiple third downs into first downs to keep drives alive which ultimately resulted in touchdowns.
Play One: With four minutes and two seconds remaining in the 1st quarter, on 3rd down and two, Darian Mensah completed a pass to tight end Jake Taylor for 16 yards and a first down. Three plays later running back Nate Sheppard ran 12-yards for a touchdown to cut Cal’s lead to 14-7.
Play Two: With Cal leading 21-14 and at the Duke 46-yard line, freshman safety Andrew Pellicciotta intercepted a JKS pass in a play that completely switched momentum in the game. This was the first of four interceptions Cal would throw in the game. Starting quarterback JKS threw the first three with backup Devin Brown throwing the fourth on his only pass in the game.
Play Three: On 3rd down and nine, two minutes and twenty-five seconds before halftime, Darian Mensah completed a pass to Que’Sean Brown for 23-yards and a first down. Two plays later, running back Anderson Castle powered into the end zone to give Duke its first lead at 28-21.
Play Four: Fifty-three seconds before halftime, freshman linebacker Elliot Schaper sacked Cal quarterback JKS to force a punt. Six plays later Todd Pelino kicked a 25-yard field goal to extend Duke’s lead to 31-21 at the half.
Play Five: With six minutes and forty-six seconds remaining in the game, linebacker Elliot Schaper intercepted a JKS pass to record Duke’s third interception. Two plays later, running back Nate Sheppard iced the game with a 46-yard touchdown run to close out the scoring at Duke 45, Cal 21.
