Yoane Wissa has admitted he returned too early from his early-season injury amid an awful season at Newcastle United following his £55million move last summer.
The striker arrived on deadline day to replace Alexander Isak, but he has struggled to make any impact, with injuries and lack of match rhythm affecting his performances.
Wissa has made limited starts and has scored just one Premier League goal, failing to establish himself in Eddie Howe’s side and prompting Newcastle to already looking for
buyers ahead of the summer transfer window.
Right after joining the Magpies, Wissa suffered a knee injury on international duty that delayed his debut until December. Since returning, he has been unable to secure a consistent role in the starting lineup, let alone start games as initially expected.
“I didn’t wait for the proper time to come back (from injury),” Wissa told JoelBeyaTV. “It should have definitely been more. You just want to catch the train, but that was impossible, because my knee wasn’t right.”
This situation has led to reports of Newcastle’s preference to move the 29-year-old on this summer. Despite that uncertainty, Wissa has made it clear he wants to remain and fight for his place in the squad next season.
“I am a soldier. I will keep going. I want the fans to know the love I have for this shirt,” Wissa said. “Looking forward to next season, I understand how big this club is, I hope I’m going to do better. It’s such a privilege. I just want to wear the shirt.”
Newcastle are expected to reassess their attacking options this summer, but odds are Wissa’s days in Tyneside are numbered.
