Can Robin Roefs become Sunderland’s long-term number one and establish himself as the Netherlands’ next great goalkeeper after an electric debut Premier League season?
Sunderland have confirmed that Roefs has extended his stay on Wearside until 2031.
The Dutch international was key in the Black Cats’ seventh-place finish during the 2025/2026 season and subsequent Europa League qualification. He would finish joint-sixth for clean sheets (10), with the third-highest save percentage (70.3%), as well as placing
fifth for saves per ninety (3.1). Roefs also conceded the fourth-least amount of goals (48), behind Brighton, Manchester City and champions Arsenal.
The extension of Roefs’ contract not only shows ambition from the player, but also the club.
It clearly shows how highly he is rated by everyone and, for good measure, in his debut Premier League season, he ranks among the top five goalkeepers in the Premier League and, arguably, the country.
At just twenty three years old, his potential is promising, and he has a real chance at being the Netherlands’ number one at the next World Cup if he continues his electric form for Sunderland.
Goalkeeper is a position the club have seemingly gotten right in the last few seasons, with academy graduate Anthony Patterson holding down the position from the midway point of 2021/2022 until our promotion to the Premier League in 2024/2025. Roefs has seamlessly taken over that position and has been one of our best signings in my lifetime, and the stats back this up.
