After a great deal of speculation as to whether or not Bayern Munich’s hierarchy was going to decide to extend Max Eberl’s contract at the club as board member for sport, it looks like the former RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach man is set for a longer stay with the German Rekordmeister.
Per information from Tz’s Manuel Bonke and Philipp Kessler (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern is getting set to extend Eberl’s contract through June 2029 after the supervisory board meets next week. Previously, it was
understood that difficult decisions might have to be made during this meeting, but Eberl’s extension is now just considered to be a formality as the club’s hierarchy is now convinced he’s the right man for the role he’s in.
The fact of the matter is, Eberl joined the club after stepping away from his role at RB Leipzig to a bit of a baptism by fire. At the time he came in the door at Bayern, the club had just announced they’d be parting ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the 2023/24 season, so Eberl was immediately thrust into helping find a new manager, eventually landing Vincent Kompany; a decision that’s proven to have been well worth it. In addition to that Eberl has been tasked, along with sporting director Christoph Freund, with trying to lower the club’s overall wage bill, while having still been able to sign top talents like Michael Olise, Luis Diaz, Jonathan Tah, Ismael Saibari, and Nathaniel Brown. Case in point, Eberl’s job seems nearly impossible at times, especially for someone who was experiencing burnout towards the end of his tenure as Mönchengladbach sporting director, but he’s found ways to make it work at Bayern.
With his new proposed contract extension, there will be some conditions in place. Eberl will no longer have as much control over the FC Bayern Campus as he previously did as that will primarily be tasked to Freund and Bayern’s director of development, Jochan Sauer. Additionally, Eberl will be losing chief scout Nils Schmadtke, who is reportedly going to be replaced by Manchester United head scout Christopher Vivell.
