Rutgers football has canceled its annual spring game for 2026, per head coach Greg Schiano. The announcement was made public by Chris Iseman of USA Today, who tweeted it after Schiano made the announcement to reporters during the team’s pro day today. The decision to cancel the game came out because Schiano believes that hosting the game is “not in the best interest of the program.”
Rutgers will still have their spring training camp practices as usual. Those will start on Friday, March 27th.
While
Schiano did not provide the reporters with a direct reason for canceling the game, this reflects a trend among college programs all around the country. One of the main reasons why these games are being canceled is because of injuries. On top of that, they provide extra film for opponents to use on the different plays a team might run.
Last season, Rutgers wide receiver Famah Toure was knocked out for the season after sustaining a knee injury in the team’s spring game. Toure was expected to take a jump forward and see an increased role in 2025, but could not due to his injury.
11 power four teams did not have a spring game last year, and more are expected to join them this year.
Now, Rutgers fans will have to wait until the fall to see what the team’s new defense will look like, as well as how the team’s new quarterback looks under center. The team will be hosting a quarterback competition this offseason between AJ Surace and Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan. Usually, the fans would be able to see the height of this matchup in the team’s spring game, as they did for the Athan Kaliakmanis- Gavin Wimsatt quarterback competition, but that will not be the case this year.
Rutgers defense also underwent a massive change this offseason, with almost an entirely new coaching staff on that side of the ball. Now the fans will have to wait to see how the teams’ play changes along with it.
