Newcastle United finally appears to be making progress in its search for a full-back, with negotiations underway for a player Matthias Jaissle knows particularly well.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed Sam C’s initial report and added on Tuesday that Newcastle has already opened club-to-club talks with Benfica over Bosnia and Herzegovina international Amar Dedic. Negotiations are ongoing and the 23-year-old interested in moving to St. James’ Park, which points toward an imminent agreement looming in the near
horizon.
“Newcastle are in club to club talks with Benfica for 23 year old fullback Amar Dedic,” Romano reported. “Negotiations started today and Dedić is keen on #NUFC move, also approved as target by Matthias Jaissle. Deal on.”
Dedic’s relationship with Jaissle could also help negotiations advance quickly. The Newcastle head coach previously worked with him at Liefering during the 2020-21 campaign before coaching him again at RB Salzburg between 2022 and 2023.
Dedic made 52 appearances under Jaissle at Salzburg, contributing to 10 goals. His versatility could also address Newcastle’s need for cover on both sides of defense, particularly given the exit of left-back Alex Murphy and the injuries currently impacting the unit. Dedic has previously operated as an inverted left-back under the German despite primarily playing on the right.
According to Record, Benfica has set an acquisition price of €35 million for their player. Dedic joined Benfica from Salzburg last summer for approximately €12 million (£10.4 million) and remains contracted through 2030.
