Last week, ESPN reported that the Washington Spirit have paid a $950,000 transfer fee to Club Olimpia (Paraguay top-flight league) for star forward Claudia Martínez.
Today, the signing is official. The contract is for three years through 2028 with a club option for 2029.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity Washington Spirit is giving me at this new stage of my career,” said Martínez. “I’m very happy to be joining such a respected institution in women’s soccer at a global level.”
At Club Olimpia, Martínez
has scored 10 goals in 25 appearances, leading the club to consecutive top-two finishes in the league. In 2023, she started her club career with Sportivo Ameliano before the move to Olimpia.
“For someone so early in her career, Claudia has a lot of great experience and the potential to develop into a top player,” said General Manager Nathan Minion. “Her qualities in the attack make her a great fit for the Spirit and we look forward to welcoming her to DC.”
Internationally, the Capitán Bado native has starred for the Paraguayan youth national teams before making her senior team debut in July 2024.
