I was not expecting to see a noteworthy Sunday night Chicago Bears news drop, but in his recent training camp notebook at Sports Illustrated, Albert Breer gave the first update we’ve had all year on left tackle Ozzy Trapilo.
“It looks like Ozzy Trapilo, who started six regular-season games at left tackle, then tore his patellar tendon in the wild-card round, might be back sooner than expected.”
Initial reports on the injury were bleak, with some believing he may miss the entire season, so “sooner than
expected” would be great.
Breer also had positive stuff to say about Caleb Williams, Colston Loveland, and Darnell Wright, and he painted a much prettier picture of Chicago’s defensive line than most have.
Speedy rookie wideout Zavion Thomas left yesterday’s practice with a knee injury, and ESPN’s Courtney Cronin received some positive news about him. “I’m told he’s dealing with soreness in his knee and is likely day-to-day in his recovery,” Cronin shared. “He shouldn’t be out long.”
Those preseason and joint practice reps are valuable for young players, so hopefully Thomas is back soon.
And finally, we shared the initial report on Luther Burden III last night, and now ESPN’s Adam Schefter has shared what his sources are telling him about the injury. “Chicago WR Luther Burden III is expected to miss the preseason due to the strained groin injury he suffered Saturday, but the Bears believe he should be back for the team’s regular-season opener vs. the Panthers, per sources.”
Which is pretty much what was reported last night, but considering Burden’s importance to the offense, and how good he looked all offseason, I could see the Bears being extra cautious with his return.
The Bears are practicing at Stevenson High School today, and we’ll share a camp report on that later this afternoon.
