Bayern Munich’s rip-roaring 2025/26 campaign came to a crashing halt in the Champions League semifinals against Paris Saint-Germain. A wild 5-4 first leg ended in a 6-5 aggregate defeat to the eventual repeat winners — the kind of result that can result in endless hours of agony over every odd bounce of the ball along the way.
Close. So close. But no big ear.
“Sometimes it comes down to that little bit of luck,” Tah acknowledged in an interview with Sky Germany’s Torben Hoffmann, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
“But you also have to earn your luck, and we’ve done that in other matches and situations.
“At the same time, you shouldn’t over-analyze it or keep asking why things happened the way they did. Of course, there were tactical aspects we could have handled differently, including in the Real Madrid match, when we conceded goals and made difficult for ourselves. But ultimately, it’s about embedding our style of play even more firmly and bringing that conviction into every single game. If we do that, we’ll be able to win those matches — and then maybe that little bit of luck will be on our side.”
This is an interesting example of the different perspective on Bayern’s Champions League prospects from the inside. While fans have sometimes clamored for greater investment — a deeper squad with more players and fewer sales — the view from within the locker room is that Bayern were and remain top contenders. The Bavarians came close last year before losing narrowly to the eventual champions. The harmony within the team, attributed in part to the smaller squad size, and the rhythm achieved by virtue of having less frequent rotation than might look ideal on paper, were both key elements of Bayern’s run.
So why not keep the same formula and say: ‘okay lads, we go again’?
