UFC CEO Dana White says the octagon will officially head to the White House.
On Thursday night during an Instagram Live, White announced a slew of fights for UFC 321 and UFC 322 — including the Jack Della Maddalena vs. Islam Makhachev welterweight title fight headlining the UFC’s return to Madison Square Garden. At the tail end of his announcements, White said that the UFC and White House officials “got it done today.”
“We had the meeting at the White House,” White added. “It could have not gone better.
The White House fight is on. The White House fight is on. I will have more details on that in the next couple of weeks.”
The idea is for the event to take place July 4 on the White House’s South Lawn to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States.
Ever since President Donald Trump proposed the idea of hosting an event on such a historic day in U.S. history, White has hit the ground running. It also hasn’t been difficult for White, and UFC brass, to find fighters who want to compete on the card. Stars and former champions such as Conor McGregor and Jon Jones have publicly shown their interest in competing. White said that he has more faith in “The Notorious” competing on the card, ending is multi-year hiatus, while Jones is at “a billion to one” odds to end his retirement at the event.
