While Liverpool’s 2025-26 season has fallen well short of expectation for the Premier League’s defending champions, there have still been a few bright spots on the pitch in an otherwise difficult season. None more so perhaps than the form of midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
The versatile captain of the Hungarian national team has shone this season, and he’s done so while filling in at multiple positions and taking on multiple roles, a regular standout both in the middle of the pitch as well as at right
back and in the attack when called upon. In the end, though, he says he can’t enjoy his personal good form as much as he might like, not when the team has struggled.
“I feel like I am at my peak in my career,” Szoboszlai noted. “Trying to help the team, give my best, and enjoy playing football. Because the team is not doing as well as I would like it to, I cannot enjoy it as much as I would enjoy it if we would also win the games and be in the same position like, for example, last season. But that’s the aim. That’s what we are aiming for.”
Liverpool have managed to find something resembling stability over the past month, going nine matches without a defeat in all competitions. After their dire run through October and November, it is perhaps a solid foundation on which to build a strong finish to the current season.
Mounting a title defence may be out of reach with leaders and upcoming opponents Arsenal a full 14 points clear, but top four is a viable target and they remain well positioned in the Champions League and kick off their FA Cup campaign against Barnsley on the 12th. Silverware, then, is still very much on offer, and winning in Europe in particular would instantly make the season a success.
“Look game by game and start to win games,” Szoboszlai added when asked what the remaining goals are for him and the team this season. “That’s the first step to success. Then let’s see what the future brings. We have a lot of goals as a team but that’s what we would like to achieve.”
