You might recall that a few weeks ago, after the Minnesota game I believe, I asked the staff if Purdue had a QB controversy brewing. Maybe I was just mad at the inconsistent play of Browne when I sent
that question out, I’m not sure. By the time I drafted my own response I said stick with Browne. Well, after the end of the Rutgers game I wanted to take the temperature again. So, here’s what I asked the staff.
Remember a couple weeks back when I asked about if Purdue had a QB controversy and you all said no? What about now?
Ledman:
Give me Singleton. Browne has made too many back breaking mistakes. If the QB position had handled it’s business Purdue would have wins against Minnesota and Rutgers under their belts, four wins total, and the vibes around this program would be much much different. I don’t know if Singleton is the answer but I hope that NIL isn’t the reason that Browne is still in the #1 seat. This season has been a tough one to watch because Purdue keeps shooting themselves in the foot. Maybe a change at QB will prevent that from continuously happening. It’s at least worth a shot in my opinion.
Travis:
I don’t think it is a QB controversy as much as it is a play calling controversy. Just run the damn ball more. It was working against Minnesota. It was working against Rutgers. If we had actually had the football it would have worked against Northwestern. Purdue has two more wins right now if it stays committed to the run game against Minnesota and Rutgers, and for two reasons: 1. It was working with great success, so do it until they stop you. 2. Purdue’s receivers cannot catch the ball with regularity. Browne is putting the ball in spots to catch it, but the drops have been killer.
It honestly doesn’t matter who starts right now. Until the drops problem is settled Drew Brees could be back there and it wouldn’t matter.
Jed:
Well, I don’t think many expected Ryan Browne to continue struggling with some basic things like he has as the season has progressed. As much as I do like Browne, at this point in the season with a near zero chance at a bowl game Odom has to see what he has for next season. Number one on that list is quarterback.
It’s time to give Singleton an opportunity while everyone is relatively healthy to get a good read on what he may provide for next season. Can he be a type of player who elevates those around him, make smart plays, and not turn the ball over? That’ll be the biggest things the staff is going to be looking at.
Ultimately, Odom has to see if either is worthwhile to keep for next year or he needs to dip back into the portal for more talent at the QB position. To be honest, I don’t think either had what is needed to get Purdue to the next level.
Ryan:
Purdue has 4 games left this season and all 4 may very well be against ranked teams (depending on if Washington hops into the top 25 after this week). If you’re Purdue, you know that the idea of record is out the window and you’re staring down a 2-10 season. But what do you do with these final 4 games of the season? I will use the lawyerly answer and say it depends. Are you dead-set on Ryan Browne returning as your starter next season as a junior (given he doesn’t transfer again)? If you are, then you leave him out there and let him try and use the last third of the season to play against tough opponents with the hopes that he can develop more even if marginally. Should there be any doubt that Browne is not your guy next season, you move on to Malachi Singleton and start to see what you have on your team for next year. And yes, I absolutely hate that we need to have this conversation only 2/3 (or halfway if we count the original roundtable) through the season but here we are anxiously awaiting basketball season again.
Drew:
Browne showed enough early to be given the opportunity to show what he’s capable of against three teams that don’t overwhelm Purdue in terms of talent. He made some nice throws on occasion, but his penchant for turning the ball over at the worst possible time cost Purdue at least one, if not two, of the three games.
It’s also time to see what Purdue has in Singleton. Purdue invested in two quarterbacks this off-season and needs to see if they need to hit the portal again. I don’t think Browne is the future, now it’s time to see what Singleton brings to the party.
Kyle:
Time for a change.
Start Singleton.
Thats the tweet.
