The weather’s starting to cool off, but the Rockies aren’t. They’re hoping to keep their recent strong play going as they kick off a series in Pittsburgh.
Antonio Senzatela (4-14, 7.00 ERA) has largely had a 2025 to forget, but turned in one of his best starts of the season a few days ago against the Arizona Diamondbacks when he threw five innings of shutout ball. He’ll look to turn in similar results against the Pirates, who torched him for a season-high-tying eight earned runs on August 1st.
Of course,
that insane game ended up as a ludicrous 17-16 Colorado victory. I wouldn’t bank on getting that kind of run support tonight, what with the Rockies road numbers being far less explosive then their offensive output at home.
Pittsburgh’s Braxton Ashcraft (3-2, 3.02 ERA) will be making his fourth start of his career. Since debuting in May, the rookie has largely worked out of the bullpen, including an appearance on August 2nd that saw him allow three runs in two innings against the Rox. Now the former second-round pick will continue to make his bid for a spot in the Pirates rotation with a strong outing tonight.
The Rockies will line up largely the same way they’ve done recently, though Kyle Karros has been moved up to hit fifth for just the second time in his burgeoning career. He’s probably itching to go after not being in the lineup the last few days.
Expect a bullpen appearance – and season debut – from Lucas Gilbreath, recalled today from Triple-A Albuquerque.
